I am finding it more than necessary that historians provide honest narratives about RACISM and POLITICS in the United States. In the aftermath of the Presidential election, I am wondering how many people remember the racialized politics of the 1950’s to 1980’s.
Here is one politician I believe many Southern born Blacks will never forget.
Senator James O. Eastland ran the White House and the Senate with an iron fist. Eastland used the Judiciary Committee as the burying ground of civil rights legislation until the Senate leadership devised ways to circumvent his power in the 1960s. As Vice President pro tempore, Eastland received thousands of dollars from farm subsidies. This wealthy planter was so greedy that he stole land that my paternal great grandmother purchased and gifted to his friend. My father moved to Chicago from Cleveland, MS area soon after this.
